Self-Tan vs Sun Tan: How It Actually Works on Your Skin

Self-tan can look like magic. It isn't — it's chemistry. We asked Dr Natasha Cook MBBS (Hons) FACD, a board-certified specialist dermatologist, to answer the questions we hear most from the Loving Tan community: how self-tan really works, why it's the safer glow, and how to keep sensitive skin happy through it.

How does self-tanner work on your skin?

Self-tan works through a straightforward chemical reaction — no sun required.

The active ingredient is dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a plant-derived 3-carbon sugar. When DHA meets the amino acids in your stratum corneum (the outermost layer of skin), it triggers a reaction that produces melanoidins — brown compounds that temporarily darken skin to mimic a sun-kissed glow.

Good to know: because this reaction only affects your skin's surface layer, your tan fades on its own as those cells shed — typically five to seven days after application.

Self-tan vs. sun tan: which is actually better for your skin?

There's no such thing as a safe UV tan. That golden colour from sun exposure or a tanning bed is your skin's visible response to DNA damage — full stop.

"Self-tanning is a method of safely simulating the appearance of a tan all year round without UV sun damage, so it's a yes from me."
— Dr Natasha Cook, MBBS (Hons) FACD

Self-tan gives you the same warm, bronzed look without the UV exposure that drives up to 90% of visible skin ageing and raises skin cancer risk. It's the glow, minus the damage — which is the whole reason self-tanning exists as a category.

How to look after your skin and your self-tan?

Skin needs a little extra care all year round. Here's how to look after your skin before, during, and after tanning.

High concentrations of DHA can sometimes leave skin dehydrated, so hydration is non-negotiable. Dr Cook's protocol:

  • Moisturise twice daily, face and body, year-round — not just on tanning days.
  • Skip foaming cleansers. They strip the moisture your skin needs to hold its glow.
  • Choose formulas built on humectants and emollients like glycerin and shea butter, which draw in and lock down hydration between applications.

Skin that's well hydrated holds colour more evenly and fades more evenly — which is exactly why Loving Tan formulas are built with skin-loving actives alongside the tan itself.

Dr Cook's best advice for looking after your skin

SPF is non-negotiable. Wear an SPF 50+ every day — mineral-only where possible, with antioxidants like niacinamide (vitamin B3), and broad protection against UVA, UVB, visible light, infrared, and environmental pollutants. (Dr Cook's own formulation, FaceShield True 50, is built to this exact brief for sensitive skin.)

Play the long game. Early intervention is prevention. Dr Cook recommends a laser or energy-based device treatment roughly every six months to support long-term collagen and elastin.

Quick answers

What other risks are there to sun tanning? Beyond premature ageing — fine lines, wrinkles, sunspots and loss of elasticity — cumulative UV exposure is the leading cause of skin cancer, including melanoma. Tanning beds carry the same risk and are classified as a Group 1 carcinogen. Sunburn, eye damage and a weakened skin barrier are also on the list. That's why self-tan is a perfect option for achieving a bronzed result, without ever needing the sun.

Does self-tan damage skin like a suntan does? No. Self-tan works on the skin's surface via a DHA reaction and carries no UV exposure or DNA damage risk, unlike sun or tanning-bed exposure.

How long does a self-tan last? Around five to seven days, fading naturally as skin cells shed.

Who can self-tan? Almost anyone. Self-tan works on all skin tones and types, with no UV involved, so it's a safe option for those who burn easily, are photosensitive, or simply choose to stay out of the sun.

Why choose Loving Tan? A proprietary dual-active blend of DHA and Erythrulose for a natural-looking, longer-lasting colour, a tinted guide for foolproof application, and skin-loving ingredients are worked into every formula. Professional-strength, dermatologically tested, and Australian-made.
